Before you ask
Questions people ask
Do you really cover Peterborough from Bedford?
Yes. We have replaced a roof in PE1 and we cover the city regularly. It is a straight run up the A1 for us.
My 1980s house has a damp loft but the tiles look fine. What is going on?
Very often the felt under the tiles has perished. You cannot see it from outside, but it stops keeping the water out. We will look in the loft and on the roof and show you photos.
Which parts of Peterborough do you cover?
PE1 to PE4 and PE7, so the city centre and the townships around it. Ring 01234 634 016 with your postcode.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about roofing in Peterborough
Peterborough, north on the A1
Peterborough is a longer drive for us, straight up the A1 from Bedford, but it is a city we work in. We have replaced a roof in PE1, and we cover the city across PE1 to PE4 and PE7.
Fletton brick and a planned city
Peterborough gave its name to the Fletton brick, made in huge numbers in the clay pits south of the city, and a lot of the older housing stock is built from it. The city then doubled in size as a planned new town from the 1970s, so the roofs here fall broadly into two camps:
- Older terraces and semis near the centre: slate and clay tile, chimneys, lead valleys and roofs that may be a hundred years old or more.
- New town housing from the 1970s and 80s: concrete tile roofs that are now forty or fifty years old, with original felt that is splitting and battens that have softened.
The 1970s and 80s roof
This is the job we see most often on homes of that era. The tiles look fine from the street, but the felt underneath has perished, so the loft gets damp and the first heavy rain finds its way in. We strip the roof, fit a breathable membrane and new treated battens and counter-battens, re-tile, and put on a dry ridge and dry verge so there is no mortar to fail. With the roof open, it is a good time to top up the loft insulation.
