Before you ask
Questions people ask
How often should a roof in Sandy be cleaned of moss?
There is no fixed rule. Shaded roofs near the trees grow moss faster than open ones. The time to act is when it is thick enough to lift tiles or block the gutters. We can look and tell you honestly whether it needs doing yet.
Will you check the roof while you clean it?
Yes. We look at the tiles, ridge, verges, valleys and flashings and take photos of anything wrong, so you see it for yourself.
Do you cover Potton and the other SG19 villages?
Yes, the SG19 villages are covered the same as Sandy. Ring 01234 634 016 with your postcode.

More about roofing in Sandy
Sandy is close to home
Sandy is barely fifteen minutes east of Bedford along the A603, so it is one of the easiest towns for us to get to. We cover the town and the SG19 villages for repairs, re-roofs and everything in between.
Hills, trees and a lot of moss
Sandy sits at the foot of the Greensand Ridge, with the RSPB's woodland on the hill above the town. Trees and shade are lovely to live near, but they are hard on a roof:
- Moss grows thick on north-facing and shaded slopes, holds water against the tiles and lifts them over time.
- Leaves and needles fill gutters and valleys, and a blocked valley is one of the most common causes of a leak we find.
- Damp sits longer on shaded roofs, so tired felt and battens rot sooner.
How we clean a roof
We scrape moss off by hand and clear the gutters and valleys while we are up there. We never jet-wash a roof. It breaks tiles, strips the surface off them and forces water under the laps, and we have replaced a fair few tiles damaged by other firms who did it. Once the roof is clean we check the ridge, verges and flashings and photograph anything that needs attention, so you can decide what to do next.
Bigger jobs too
If the felt underneath has failed, a clean will not fix it. We will show you, and quote for the repair or the re-roof in writing with every item listed. New roofs get a breathable membrane, treated battens and a dry ridge, and we can top up the loft insulation to 300mm or more while the roof is open.
