Before you ask

Questions people ask

Which is best for a flat roof: felt, GRP or EPDM?

Each has its place. EPDM suits simple shapes with few joins, GRP gives a hard finish with no joins that looks smart, and felt is a proven choice for garages and extensions. We look at your roof and recommend one, and explain why.

My flat roof has a puddle on it. Is that a problem?

Standing water usually means the deck has sagged or the roof has lost its fall. It puts strain on the covering and finds any weak spot. We check the boards underneath and put the fall right when we re-cover.

Can you put a skylight in my flat roof?

Yes. We fit opening skylights in flat roofs, often as part of a new roof so the opening is framed and sealed properly from the start.

Can you repair my flat roof or does it need replacing?

A split or a failed edge can often be repaired. If the deck is soft or the covering has failed all over, replacing it is better value. We will show you which it is.

Ready when you are

It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.

More about flat roofs

Flat roofs that stay dry

Extensions, garages, dormers and workshops. We fit felt, GRP fibreglass and EPDM rubber flat roofs, and we will tell you which one suits your roof and how you use it. If the boards underneath are soft, we replace them, because a new covering on a rotten deck will not last.

One of our recent jobs started as a tired polycarbonate workshop roof. It came off completely and was rebuilt with new boards and timber work, finished with four opening skylights.

What's included

Felt

Modern multi-layer felt systems for garages, extensions and dormers, finished neatly at the edges and upstands.

GRP fibreglass

A fibreglass finish with no joins, laid over new boards, with trims at the edges. A clean, hard-wearing surface that suits roofs people will look down on.

EPDM rubber

A single sheet of rubber membrane with very few joins, a good choice for simple shapes and larger roofs.

New deck, timbers and insulation

We strip back to the joists where needed, replace rotten timber, and fit new boards so the roof has a sound, level base with a proper fall for the water.

Skylights

We fit opening skylights in flat roofs to bring light into extensions, workshops and garden rooms.

Leadwork where the roof meets the wall

Flashings at the wall are where many flat roofs leak. We finish them with lead or the right trim for the system.

Choosing the right covering

There is no single best flat roof. The right one depends on the shape of the roof, how much it is walked on or looked down on, and what is underneath. We will give you our honest view for your roof and explain the trade-offs in plain words, rather than push the one system every job gets.

How the job runs

  1. We look at the roof and the deck, including from inside where we can, and take photos.
  2. We talk through felt, GRP and EPDM for your roof, honestly.
  3. You get an itemised written quote, including any boards or timbers that need replacing.
  4. The old roof comes off and the deck is repaired or renewed.
  5. The new covering goes on, edges and flashings are finished, and we clear the site.
