Before you ask
Questions people ask
Can you replace just a few broken roof tiles?
Yes. We refix slipped tiles and replace broken ones with a match. While we are up there we check the area around them, and tell you if anything else needs attention.
Can you reuse my old tiles?
Sometimes. If the tiles are sound, we can clean them by hand and put them back on over a new membrane and battens. If they are worn or cracked, we will tell you.
What is a dry ridge and do I need one?
A dry ridge holds the ridge tiles with clips and screws instead of mortar. It does not crack and wash out like mortar can, so we fit it as standard on new roofs and when ridges need redoing.
Why do my tiles look fine but the loft is damp?
The felt under the tiles may have failed. Old bitumen felt sags at the eaves and tears with age, letting wind-driven rain in. We check it from the loft and show you photos.

More about tiled roofs
Clay and concrete tiled roofs
Most houses round Bedford have a tiled roof, and most tiled roofs fail from underneath first. The tiles can look fine while the felt below has torn, sagged at the eaves or turned brittle. We repair and replace tiled roofs in clay and concrete, and we pay as much attention to what goes under the tiles as to the tiles themselves.
What's included
Tile repairs and replacements
Slipped and cracked tiles refixed or swapped for a match. We have also replaced tiles broken by jet washing, which is one reason we never jet-wash a roof.
Re-tiling
Where the felt has failed, the tiles come off, a new breathable membrane and treated battens go on, and the roof is re-tiled. Sound tiles can sometimes be cleaned by hand and reused.
Counter-battens
A counter-batten system lifts the battens off the membrane, giving air and water a clear path down the roof.
Dry ridge, dry verge and dry valleys
Mechanical fixings instead of mortar at the ridge, the verges and the valleys, so there is nothing to crack and wash out.
Eaves support trays
Trays at the bottom of the roof stop the membrane dipping behind the fascia, which is where old felt usually rots first.
Matching the look
Plain tiles, interlocking tiles, textured or smooth. We choose tiles that suit the house and, on older roofs, match the original as closely as we can.
Why the layer under the tiles matters
Tiles shed most of the rain, but wind drives some of it past them. The membrane underneath catches that water and carries it to the gutter. When old felt tears or sags, the water soaks the battens and the loft instead. That is why, on every tiled roof we re-cover, the work under the tiles gets as much care as the tiles on top.
