Before you ask
Questions people ask
My Cambridge terrace has slates slipping. Does it need a whole new roof?
Not necessarily. If only a few are slipping, we can refix or replace them with matching slate. If the nails have gone across the whole roof, a re-slate is the lasting answer. Our photos will show you which you have.
Can you work on a house in a Cambridge conservation area?
Yes. Most repairs are like for like and need no consent. If what you want would change how the roof looks, we will tell you so you can check with the council before anything starts.
Can you add a skylight when you replace our flat roof?
Yes. We fit opening skylights in new flat roofs, which is the easiest time to do it.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about roofing in Cambridge
Cambridge, east along the A428
We travel to Cambridge from Bedford along the A421 and A428, and we cover the city from CB1 to CB5. Most of our Cambridge work is on homes rather than colleges: the terraced streets, the Victorian villas and the postwar houses on the edges.
Gault brick and slate
A great deal of Victorian Cambridge was built in gault brick, the pale yellow-white brick the city is known for, and roofed in Welsh slate. Streets of these terraces fill the areas around Mill Road, Romsey, Chesterton and De Freville. Slate roofs of that age tend to fail in a familiar order:
- Nails rust through, and single slates slip down the roof.
- Lead around chimneys, in valleys and at the back of parapets wears thin and splits.
- Eventually so many slates are held by so little that patching costs more than relaying.
We repair slate roofs with matching natural slate, and where the whole roof is going, we strip it and re-slate it on a breathable membrane and new treated battens, in natural Spanish slate or a good man-made slate.
Conservation areas and listed buildings
Much of central Cambridge is in conservation areas, and many buildings are listed. Like-for-like repairs are usually fine, but changing materials or adding rooflights may need consent. Tell us about the building when you ring and we will be straight with you about what can be done and what to check with the council first.
Flat roofs and dormers
Cambridge has a lot of rear extensions and loft conversions with flat roofs. We renew them in GRP fibreglass or EPDM rubber, and we can fit opening skylights while we are at it.
