Before you ask
Questions people ask
Will moss removal damage my tiles?
Not the way we do it. Hand-scraping takes the moss off without the force that cracks tiles. That's exactly why we don't jet-wash.
How often does a roof need cleaning?
It depends on the roof. A north-facing slope under trees grows moss far quicker than an open south-facing one. A preventative treatment after the clean slows regrowth, and we'll tell you honestly how yours looks.
Can you clear the gutters at the same time?
Yes, it is part of the job. Most of the moss ends up in the gutters anyway, so we clear them and check the downpipes before we leave.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.

Why we do it by hand
Jet-washing a roof looks fast and makes a good before-and-after photo. It also cracks and chips tiles, strips the surface off concrete tiles and drives water up under the laps where it was never meant to go. We've been called out to replace tiles broken by someone else's jet-wash.
So we hand-scrape. It takes longer, it's harder work, and it leaves the roof in one piece.
What a roof clean includes
- Moss scraped off every slope by hand
- Debris bagged up, not washed into your drains
- Gutters cleared and downpipes checked
- A look over the tiles, ridge, verges and lead while we're up
- Photos of anything that needs attention
- A preventative treatment, if you want one, to slow the moss coming back
Why moss is worth dealing with
Moss holds water against the tiles like a sponge. In a cold snap that water freezes, expands and works at the tile surface and the joints. Thick clumps can lift tiles enough for driven rain to get underneath. And sooner or later, it all washes into the gutters and blocks the downpipes.
North-facing slopes and roofs under big trees get the worst of it. Rough concrete tiles, common on Peterborough's new town estates, give moss plenty to grip.
Sometimes moss isn't the real problem
More than one customer has rung us about moss and gutters, and we've found the felt under the tiles had failed. When that happens we show you the photos, explain what we've found and leave the decision with you. If a clean is all your roof needs, a clean is all we'll quote for.
What you get at the end
Before we pack up, we send you photos of the clean roof and of anything we spotted along the way, such as a cracked tile, a slipped ridge or tired pointing. Small faults like that can often be sorted while we're already up there, if you're happy with the price. Bigger ones go on a separate written quote for you to think about in your own time.
Clean and tidy, inside and out
Moss gets everywhere if you let it. We sheet off paths and patios below the work and leave them as we found them. Customers tell us the thing they notice most is how tidy the place is when we've gone.
