Before you ask
Questions people ask
Do you definitely cover Royston?
Yes, but it is at the edge of our area. Ring 01234 634 016 and we will tell you honestly how soon we can get there for your job.
Why do my verge tiles keep coming loose?
The mortar along the verge cracks with frost and wind, then lets go. Re-pointing it only lasts so long. A dry verge system holds the tiles mechanically, so the problem does not come back.
Is it worth sending photos before you visit?
It helps, especially this far out. We still come and look before quoting, but a photo lets us bring the right materials first time.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about roofing in Royston
Royston is on the edge of our patch
We will be honest: Royston is about as far south-east as we normally go from Bedford. We do cover it, and we are glad to, but it is the edge of our area rather than the middle. Give us a ring on 01234 634 016, tell us what the problem is, and we will tell you straight whether we can get to you and when.
A town on the chalk
Royston sits where Hertfordshire meets Cambridgeshire, on the ancient Icknield Way at the foot of the chalk downs of Therfield Heath. It is an old market town, and the centre has a good share of older buildings alongside the postwar and modern housing around it. Open ground like this catches the wind, and wind finds the weak points on a roof first:
- ridge and hip tiles bedded on mortar that has cracked
- verges where the mortar has dropped out and tiles have started to move
- lead flashings that have lifted away from the chimney
What we do about it
For ridges and verges we fit dry systems that are clipped and screwed in place, so there is no mortar for the weather to break up. Flashings are renewed in proper Code 4 lead, with step flashing up the side of the stack. On older buildings in the centre we match the slates and tiles to what is there.
Because Royston is a longer trip for us, it helps if you can send a photo or two of the problem when you get in touch. We will still come and look properly before we quote, and the written quote will list every item.
