Before you ask
Questions people ask
Can you re-slate one house in a Northampton terrace?
Yes. Re-roofing one house in a row is common. We finish neatly at the party wall and the join with next door, and make sure the lead details there are watertight.
Which areas of Northampton do you cover?
NN1 to NN5, so the town centre and the areas around it. Ring 01234 634 016 with your postcode.
Is natural slate or man-made slate better for my terrace?
Natural slate lasts longest and looks right on a Victorian terrace. Man-made slate costs less. We can explain both and quote for either.

More about roofing in Northampton
Northampton, through Bromham and Turvey
We cover Northampton from Bedford, west along the A428 through Bromham and Turvey. It is a pleasant drive and a town we are glad to work in, across NN1 to NN5.
Shoe-town terraces
Northampton made its name making shoes, and the factories brought rows and rows of Victorian terraced housing for the people who worked in them. Many of those streets are still there, and so are their roofs: Welsh slate, brick chimney stacks, lead valleys between neighbouring roofs, and back additions with their own small roof slopes. After more than a century, these are the problems we see:
- slates slipping as the old nails rust away
- chimney stacks that need repointing and new lead
- valleys and back gutters where the lead has split
- rear additions with a tired felt or flat roof
Re-slating a terrace properly
When a slate roof is beyond repair, we strip it, check the timbers, fit a breathable membrane and new treated battens, and re-slate in natural Spanish slate or a quality man-made slate. Lead goes back in Code 4 or Code 5. On a terrace we take care at the party wall and the neighbour's roof, so the join is neat and watertight.
The rest of the town
Northampton also grew a great deal in the 1970s and later, and those estates bring the usual list: failing felt, loose ridges and verges, and soffits, fascias and gutters that are due for replacing. We handle all of it, with photos of what we find and a written quote that lists every item.
We also cover: Milton Keynes · Cranfield · Kempston · Bedford · Ampthill · Oakham · Flitwick · Stamford · Sandy · St Neots · Biggleswade · Letchworth Garden City · Huntingdon · Peterborough · Royston · Cambridge · Bury St Edmunds
