Before you ask
Questions people ask
How do I know if I need a new roof or just a repair?
If the felt under the tiles has failed across the roof, or the timbers are going, a repair only buys time. If the problem is one area, a repair is usually right. We come out, take photos and show you which it is before you spend anything.
How long does a re-roof take?
It depends on the size of the roof, the material and the weather. We have re-slated a house in a single day, while a large or old roof with timber repairs takes longer. Your written quote tells you what to expect for your house.
Do I need to move out while my roof is replaced?
No. We strip and re-cover in sections so the house stays watertight, and we clear up at the end of each day. Most people carry on as normal while we work.
Will you sort out Building Control?
Yes. We arrange the inspection with Building Control and make sure the work is signed off, so you have the certificate when you need it.
Can you match the tiles on an old house?
We try to every time. On a 120-year-old roof in Letchworth the finished roof is a close match to the original, which matters a lot on older houses and in places with a strong local character.

More about roof replacement
A new roof, built properly from the timbers up
A lot of our re-roofs start as a call about something small. Moss, a blocked gutter, a damp patch on the landing ceiling. Then we get up there and find the felt underneath has given up, and no amount of patching will keep the water out for long. When that is the case we tell you, and we show you the photos. When it isn't, we say so too.
We have replaced a 120-year-old four-gable roof in Letchworth to match the original, re-slated 200-year-old houses, and stripped and re-slated a house in Milton Keynes in a single day.
What's included
Strip and check the timbers
The old covering comes off and we look at every rafter. Anything rotten or sagging is put right before a single batten goes on.
Membrane and battens
We fit a BBA-approved breathable membrane, or TLX Gold insulated membrane where you want better thermal performance, on treated battens and counter-battens so the roof can breathe.
Tiles or slate to suit the house
Clay or concrete tiles, natural Spanish slate or man-made slate. On older properties we work hard to match what was there, because a new roof should look like it belongs.
Dry fix details
Dry ridge, dry verge and dry valley systems mean no mortar to crack and fall out. Eaves support trays stop the felt sagging and rotting at the bottom of the roof.
Leadwork and insulation
New Code 4 or Code 5 lead around chimneys and abutments, and loft insulation topped up to 300mm or more while the roof is open.
Building Control sign-off
A re-roof normally needs Building Regulations approval. We arrange the inspection and the sign-off, so you have the paperwork when you come to sell.
How the job runs
- We come and look. Roof, loft and gutters, with photos of what we find.
- You get an itemised written quote. Scaffold, materials, skip and even a site toilet are listed line by line, so you can see where every pound goes.
- We book Building Control and agree a start date with you.
- Scaffold goes up and the old roof comes off one section at a time, so the house is never left open.
- The new roof goes on, and the site is cleared at the end of every day.
- Inspection and handover. The roof is signed off and you get our written company guarantee.
If soffits, fascias or gutters are tired, it makes sense to change them while the scaffold is already up. We will point it out, and you decide.
