Before you ask

Questions people ask

Can moss damage a slate roof?

Yes, indirectly. It holds water in the overlaps between slates, and frost then works on it. On an older roof the bigger risk is the wrong cleaning method, which is why we only clean by hand.

When is the best time of year for a roof clean?

Any dry spell works. Many people book in late summer or autumn so the gutters are clear before winter rain. If moss is already blocking your gutters, don't wait for a season.

Is a moss treatment on its own enough?

Not for thick moss. A treatment slows regrowth, but heavy growth needs to come off by hand first, or it simply dies in place and ends up in the gutters.

Ready when you are

It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.

More about moss removal & roof cleaning in Northampton

The tree-lined streets around Abington Park and the long back gardens behind many Northampton houses give roofs plenty of shade, and shade means moss. A light green film is cosmetic. Thick cushions are not. They soak up rain like a sponge, hold it against the roof for days, and wash down to block gutters until water spills over the wall.

What moss does to different roofs

Slate

On the terraces, moss works into the overlaps between slates and keeps them wet, which gives frost something to work on. On an older slate roof with tired nails, the last thing it needs is a pressure washer knocking slates loose.

Concrete and clay tiles

On the estate houses, moss grips the textured face of concrete tiles and builds up fast on the shady slope. Clay tiles collect it in the joints.

Why we clean by hand

We hand-scrape moss off and we never jet-wash a roof. High pressure water breaks tiles, strips their surface and forces water under the laps. We have replaced tiles damaged by jet washing done by others. Cleaning by hand takes longer, and it is the right way to do it.

What the job includes

  • A check of the roof before we work across it
  • Moss and debris hand-scraped from the tiles or slates
  • Gutters and downpipes cleared
  • Waste bagged and taken away
  • A preventative treatment to slow regrowth
  • Photos of anything we noticed, from a cracked tile to a lifted flashing

Gutters on a terrace

On a terrace, gutters often run straight on to next door's and share a downpipe, so moss from one roof can block the run for both houses. We clear your section and the outlet it drains to, and if the blockage is on next door's side we tell you so you can let them know.

Left as we found it, minus the moss

Moss removal is messy work, so the clean-up matters as much as the roof. Customers who have had a moss and gutter clean from us mention that we turned up when we said we would and left everything clean and tidy. We cover all of Northampton from Bedford, about 40 minutes away by the A428.
