Before you ask
Questions people ask
Can you remove spray foam from a roof with no felt?
Yes, with care. Without felt the foam is often bonded straight to the slates and battens, so we take it off slowly to avoid disturbing them. If the roof needs underlay or repairs afterwards, we'll show you and quote for it.
How do I know which kind of foam I have?
Closed-cell foam is hard and rigid; open-cell is softer and springy to the touch. We confirm which you have at the survey, because it changes how long removal takes.
Will the house be colder without the foam?
Not once the loft is insulated properly. We top up insulation at ceiling level to 300mm or more, so the rooms below keep their warmth and the roof space stays ventilated.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about spray foam removal in Northampton
On a Victorian roof with no felt under the slates, spray foam is usually sprayed straight onto the back of the slates and battens. It glues the whole roof together from underneath. That stops a few slipped slates for a while, but it also hides the battens, holds damp against old timber and makes the roof very hard to repair later. Plenty of Northampton's older terraces are that kind of roof, which is why we take care over how foam comes out of them.
What we find under the foam
Until it is off, nobody knows for sure. Sometimes the rafters and battens are sound. Sometimes they are damp or soft where the foam has stopped them drying. Either way, you and your surveyor will see it, because we photograph the roof space once it is clear.
The job, start to finish
Survey and quote
We look at the foam type, how much of the roof it covers and what runs through the loft. You get a written quote with everything listed.
Removal
The foam is cut and scraped away by hand, bagged and taken off site, with care around wiring, pipes and the slates and battens it is stuck to.
Inspection and photos
With the timbers visible again, we check them and show you what we found. If anything needs repairing, we explain it and quote for it separately. Nothing is added without your say-so.
Clean up
The loft is cleared and left clean. Customers tell us they notice that.
Other trades we arrange
- An electrician to disconnect and reconnect solar panels whose cabling runs through the loft
- Loft insulation topped up to 300mm or more at ceiling level
- Roof repairs, if the inspection shows they are needed
