Before you ask
Questions people ask
Why does my roof only leak in certain winds?
Driving rain finds gaps that ordinary rain does not, usually at flashings, valleys and the edges of slipped slates. Tell us which way the weather was coming from and it narrows the search a lot.
Can you repair just my half of a shared valley or stack?
Yes, though water does not respect boundaries. If the fault sits on the line between two houses, we show you exactly where, so you and your neighbour can decide together.
Do you guarantee repairs as well as new roofs?
Yes. Repairs come with our written company guarantee, and if you have any problems we will come back and fix the fault.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about roof repairs in Northampton
On a Northampton terrace the leak is rarely where it looks. Water that shows on a back bedroom ceiling may have come in at the valley where the rear section meets the main roof, run along a rafter and dropped a metre away. Finding the true entry point is most of the job, and it is what stops you paying for the same repair twice.
The back of the house is where it usually goes wrong
Most of the boot-and-shoe-era terraces across the town have a narrower rear section behind the main house. Its roof meets the main slope in lead valleys and step flashing, and those details take the most water and age fastest.
- Lead valleys split by years of heating and cooling
- Step flashing lifted where it meets the neighbouring wall
- Slates slipped at the junction where two slopes meet
- Old gutters overflowing onto the wall below
Front slopes and slipped slates
At the front, the usual fault is a slate that has slid down because its nail has rusted through. One or two can be refixed. If they are coming down all over, we will tell you that more patching is money spent on a roof that needs re-slating, and show you why in photos.
Estate houses too
Not every Northampton roof is a terrace. On the 1970s houses of the Eastern District and the estates to the south, the usual faults are slipped concrete tiles, cracked mortar verges and felt sagging at the eaves. Those are often fixed by rebedding, a dry verge, or opening the bottom course and fitting an eaves support tray.
What helps when you ring
- Where the water shows inside, and after what kind of weather
- Whether it is at the front or the back, and roughly which room
- Any photos you can take safely from the ground or a window
- Whether next door has had roof work done recently
