Before you ask
Questions people ask
Will my dormer roof need scaffolding?
Usually some, because a dormer sits high on the roof and needs safe access. We'll explain exactly what is needed and itemise it on the quote.
Is EPDM or felt better for a garden studio?
Both work. EPDM has fewer joins and copes well with movement; felt is quick and economical to repair. We'll suggest one based on the size and how long you want the roof to last.
My flat roof has a puddle that never drains. Is that a problem?
Yes. Standing water speeds up wear on any covering and finds the smallest defect. It usually means the roof has lost its fall or the deck has sagged, and we correct the fall when we replace it.
Ready when you are

More about flat roofs in Cambridge
Cambridge terraces have grown upward and backward over the years. Dormers on loft conversions, single-storey kitchen extensions and garden studios tend to share one thing: a flat roof, often small, often hard to reach, and often the first part of the house to leak. We fit and repair felt, GRP fibreglass and EPDM rubber roofs, and we match the system to where the roof sits.
Which system goes where
Dormer roofs
Small, high and awkward. EPDM rubber suits them well: one sheet, very few joins, and flexible at the edges where the dormer meets the main roof. We check the lead cheeks and the junction with the slope at the same time, because that is where many dormer leaks really start.
Rear and side extensions
These are often seen from upstairs windows, so the finish matters. GRP fibreglass gives a hard, clean surface with neat trims, and stands up to the odd foot from someone clearing a gutter.
Garages, sheds and garden rooms
Modern felt is a sound, sensible choice here: quick to lay and easy to repair. If a garden room is used as an office every day, EPDM is worth a look for its fewer joins.
Done properly underneath
- Decking checked, and any soft or rotten boards replaced
- A proper fall built in so water drains to the outlet, not the middle
- Upstands and flashings detailed where the roof meets a wall
- Edges and drips finished so water drops clear into the gutter
More light underneath
A new flat roof is the right moment to add an opening skylight. We once fitted four into a single flat workshop roof, and one well-placed skylight can change a dark kitchen extension completely. In a conservation area, check with the council first if the roof can be seen from the street.
Getting to you
We cover Cambridge from Bedford, about 30 miles away along the A428. Every flat roof job is quoted in writing with the system named, so you know exactly what is going on your roof. We also check the gutter or outlet the roof drains into, because a new roof draining into a blocked gutter still leaves a damp wall.
