Before you ask
Questions people ask
Is moss actually harmful, or just untidy?
Both. Moss holds water against the tiles, which can freeze and damage them, and heavy clumps can lift tiles and block gutters. A light dusting is less urgent than thick cushions.
My neighbour's jet-washed roof looks great. Why won't you do that?
It can look great on the day. The damage, cracked tiles and a worn surface, shows up later. Hand-scraping takes longer but doesn't harm the roof.
How long does a roof clean take?
It depends on the size of the roof, the pitch and how thick the moss is. We'll tell you how long yours will take when we come out to quote.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about moss removal & roof cleaning in St Neots
Before, during and after
Before
We come and look at the roof, photograph the moss and anything else we spot, and give you a written quote. If the moss is all your roof needs dealing with, that's all we'll quote for.
During
The moss is scraped off by hand, tile by tile. Paths, patios and plants below are sheeted off, and debris is bagged rather than swept into the garden or washed down your drains.
After
Gutters are cleared and downpipes checked, because that's where moss ends up. You can have a preventative treatment to slow regrowth. You get photos of the finished roof, plus anything we noticed that needs attention.
The trouble with jet-washing
A pressure washer gets moss off fast, and it does damage while it's at it. It can crack and chip tiles, wear away the surface of concrete tiles and push water up under the laps. We've replaced tiles broken by jet-washing on other people's jobs, which is why we never use one on a roof.
Roofs that grow the most moss
- North-facing slopes that rarely see the sun
- Roofs under or beside big trees
- Rough-surfaced concrete tiles, which give moss plenty to hold on to
- Lower-pitched roofs, where water drains away more slowly
- Garages and outbuildings in the shade of the house
If two or three of those apply to your St Neots house, you'll probably see moss come back quicker than your neighbour does.
A roof clean is also a roof check
While we're up, we look at the ridge, verges, lead and tiles. Now and then a moss call turns up something bigger. We've had customers ask for moss and gutters and found the felt underneath had failed. When that happens, we show you the photos and explain it plainly. There's no pressure. You decide what happens next.
Keeping it off for longer
A preventative treatment after the clean slows the moss coming back, and keeping overhanging branches trimmed helps too. Clear gutters matter as well, because standing water in a gutter keeps the bottom row of tiles damp. We will tell you honestly what your roof needs next and when.
Customers say what they notice most is that we turn up when we say we will, work hard all day and leave everything clean and tidy.
