Before you ask
Questions people ask
Do I need permission to replace my roof in Stamford?
If the house is listed, almost certainly. In the conservation area, like-for-like work may not need it, but a change of material might. Check with South Kesteven District Council first, and we will help you with the details they ask for.
Can you replace concrete tiles with something more in keeping?
Often, yes. Heavier coverings can mean checking the roof timbers can take the weight, and in the conservation area the council may have a view. We'll talk you through both before quoting.
Is Stamford too far for you to take on a re-roof?
No. It's at the edge of our area, so we plan the work tightly, but we cover it. If we think a Collyweston specialist is right for your roof, we'll say so.
Ready when you are
It takes about 30 seconds to ask, and you are not committing to anything.
More about roof replacement in Stamford
A stone town that protects its roofs
Stamford was the first conservation area designated in England, back in 1967. The old centre is almost all limestone, with hundreds of listed buildings, and the roofline is a big part of why it looks the way it does. Replacing a roof here isn't only about keeping water out. It has to look right from the street.
On a listed building you'll usually need consent before the roof is changed, and in the conservation area a change of material may need permission too. We'll help you check with South Kesteven District Council before anything is ordered, so you're not caught out halfway through.
Collyweston stone slate
Many older Stamford roofs are covered in Collyweston, a limestone slate from the village of the same name a few miles from the town. It isn't a true slate. It was traditionally split by frost, and it's laid in courses that get smaller towards the ridge. It's heavy, and matching it means finding stone of the right size and colour.
We'll be straight with you. If your roof is Collyweston and it needs a specialist stone slater, we'll say so rather than take on a job we shouldn't.
Matching what's there
Where a roof is tile or slate, matching the original is work we do. In Letchworth we replaced a failing 120-year-old roof with four gables, and the owner told us the match to the original was what mattered. A Stamford roof deserves the same care: the right covering, the right colour, and verges, ridges and lead finished the way the house was built.
What changes underneath
- Timbers checked and any rotten ones replaced
- A breathable membrane, so an old house can still move moisture
- Treated battens, with counter-battens where needed
- Code 4 and Code 5 lead for valleys, flashings and gutters
- Loft insulation topped up while the roof is open
At the edge of our patch
We're based in Bedford, and Stamford is about as far north as we go. That means we plan a Stamford re-roof carefully: one survey, a full itemised quote, and once the job starts we're there every working day until it's finished. It also means that if a local specialist suits your roof better, we'll tell you.
